Rotator Cuff Tear: Do I Need Surgery?
Hearing the words "Rotator Cuff Tear" can be scary. Many patients assume it means immediate surgery and months in a sling. However, recent research shows that physiotherapy is often just as effective as surgery for degenerative tears.
Tear vs. Strain
Strain: The muscle fibers are overstretched.
Degenerative Tear: Wear and tear over time (common in over 50s).
Traumatic Tear: Caused by a fall or accident.
The Velca Approach: Unless you have a massive traumatic tear, we usually recommend a conservative approach first.
Reduce Pain: We use acupuncture and taping to settle the shoulder.
Restore Mechanics: If your shoulder blade (scapula) isn't moving right, the cuff gets pinched. We retrain your movement.
Strength: You can teach the surrounding muscles to compensate for the tear, allowing you to lift your arm pain-free again.
